• Voice

A voice disorder is an abnormality in vocal quality, pitch, resonance or loudness.  An evaluation by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist is required prior to treatment to rule out vocal fold nodules or cysts and several additional medical diagnoses.

In order to promote healthy vocal habits you can:
    • Avoid shouting as this behavior can strain your voice.
    • Avoid yelling from room to room or over noise.
    • Avoid speaking in the presence of background noise.  Turn off the radio or television or move to another room.
    • Eliminate constant throat clearing.  This will decrease vocal abuse.
    • Drink plenty of water to keep your throat hydrated.
    • Encourage talking with a normal voice that is comfortable and doesn’t cause stress or strain.
    • Avoid talking too loudly.
