VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURES FOR SEVENTH GRADE

Text: Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop, Enriched Edition LEVEL B/SEVENTH GRADE

These paperback texts are not consumable. Please do not write in these vocabulary texts. Be sure to have your texts covered at all times. They will be reissued to other students. Please handle them carefully.

    ONLINE: vocabtest.com

Approximately every two weeks students will be assigned a new unit of vocabulary.

The unit list will be introduced in class and unit homework due dates will be assigned. A vocabulary unit test date will also be given at the beginning of each unit. The test will take place about two weeks after the introduction of the unit list, usually on a Friday.

Students should use the text when completing the online assignments. Once on the site, students should select LEVEL B.  When working online, be sure to LOG IN to your account before you begin taking “tests” or your work will not be recorded. If you must stop working on a “test” before it is completed, be sure to SAVE it(on the bottom of the screen) so that you do not have to start it from the beginning when you return.

Students will complete ten assignments referred to as “tests”  on the vocabtest.com site as homework over the course of the unit. Students should not do the “stress mark”test. Students will not be given credit for the “stress mark” test, as it is not a highly beneficial tool in acquiring vocabulary. As unit homework,  select 10 out of the remaining 11 options online OR complete nine online “tests” and  create vocabulary flash cards in place of one online test.

For students who choose to complete vocabulary flashcards:

FLASHCARDS should completed on index cards and handed in with the online homework in order to receive full credit. Flash cards must be neat and legible. One side of the card should name the list word and the other “flip” side must list the part(s) of speech and the complete definition, as it is listed in the text.  Be sure to write your name on your cards as well, in order to receive proper credit for your work. Place cards in a ziplock bag or wrap them with a rubber band before placing cards in the homework basket.

The unit homework assignments are customarily due the day(usually Thursday) before the unit test. These homework unit assignments will count collectively as a 50 point assignment.  All students have the option of doing these homework assignments as many times as they would like before the due date. The website gives immediate feedback so students may choose to redo assignments in order to improve their grade. Please note that this allows students to “choose” their homework grade by redoing the work until it meets their satisfaction.

It is highly suggested that students complete these assignments over the course of the two week period. Studying new information over the course of time is much more beneficial than cramming the night before the vocabulary unit assessment. Students also have a much better chance of incorporating new vocabulary into their “working vocabularies” if words are studied over time. The goal of vocabulary studies is to learn new terms and to be able to retrieve terms and use terms in our daily reading, writing and speaking.

STUDYING OVER THE COURSE OF THE TWO WEEK UNIT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Vocabulary unit  tests will count as 100 point assessments.

PLEASE PLACE A PRINTED COPY OF YOUR VOCABULARY ACCOUNT PAGE in  the homework box by the start of class on its due date.
